NFL Analyst Urges Steelers To Pursue Veteran Star Quarterback

Kirk Cousins

The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t exactly have an enviable situation at quarterback, which has led many to believe that they could pursue another signal-caller this offseason.

Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus thinks the Steelers should look to the free-agent market to find their next quarterback, and he specifically names Kirk Cousins as a great option.

“Cameron Heyward is going to be 35, I think, next year. T.J. Watt is going to be 30. I’m sure he’s going to be good for several more years, but maybe they just say, ‘You know what, let’s make a bit of a splash. Go get Kirk Cousins, and we think we can win a couple playoff games with everything the same but then you add in a clear upgrade at quarterback.’ I think Pittsburgh becomes fascinating there,” Spielberger said on the PFF NFL Show.

Spielberger makes a good point.

Some of Pittsburgh’s best players are not getting any younger, so the window to win with those guys may not be open for much longer.

Cousins would offer the Steelers a quick opportunity to have some playoff success, as Cousins himself will be 36 years old by time next season starts.

The catch is that Cousins tore his Achilles midway through the 2023 campaign, so whether or not he makes a full recovery—especially at his age—is anybody’s guess.

Cousins has spent the last six years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, earning three Pro Bowl selecions.

Through eight games this past season, he threw for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Pittsburgh went 10-7 this year and ultimately lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. Perhaps Kirk Cousins could take them a bit further next season.
