NFL Exec Believes Broncos Are Open To Russell Wilson Trade

After their disastrous 2022 season in which they went 5-12, things are falling apart once again for Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.

They fell to 1-4 on the year after they lost to the New York Jets, 31-21, on Sunday, and they have seemingly been inventing new ways to lose. While last season they did so behind poor play from Wilson and a historically bad offense, this year, it’s their defense that is holding them back.

They have given up over 30 points in three of their last four games, and through Sunday, they were dead-last in both points and total yards allowed.

More and more people feel like the trade for Wilson in the 2022 offseason was a mistake, given the fact that Denver simply doesn’t have the horses to make a run at the Super Bowl. There are rumors it may decide to trade at least one of its main men, and one of those man men could be Wilson himself.

A former NFL executive told NFL Analysis Network he thinks the Broncos are at least open to trading Wilson.

“I think if Denver can find even a decent trade offer, they’ll go for it,” said the executive. “The Broncos seem ready to move on from their blunder with the Wilson trade.”

Through five games, Wilson’s stats look strong — a 66.9 completion percentage, 11 touchdown passes, just two interceptions and a 106.1 passer rating. On the other hand, there have been times when he has looked bad, such as when he fumbled the ball late in the fourth quarter on Sunday with the Broncos down by just three, immediately leading to a touchdown off the fumble recovery by Bryce Hall.

When a team trades for a veteran star quarterback such as Wilson, it must do so with the intention of quickly winning a Super Bowl championship. With a couple of good-but-not-great wide receivers in Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, a weak running game and an inept defense, the Broncos are years away from joining the league’s upper echelon.

At this point, their best move may be to trade Russell Wilson, recoup some of the draft capital they gave up to get him and build incrementally rather than make a dramatic attempt to shortcut the process.
