Mike Evans will be one of the top players available on the free-agent market next month, and a former NFL executive tells the NFL Analysis Network that he sees a sleeper destination for the star wide receiver.
“There are going to be a lot of teams lined up with their checkbooks when it comes to Mike Evans,” the former exec said. “However, I think the Minnesota Vikings are a sleeper team to watch.”
The Vikings would certainly be an interesting landing spot, to say the least.
Minnesota already has Justin Jefferson in tow, so adding Evans into the mix would give the Vikings what would easily be the best one-two receiving tandem in football.
Evans has spent the first decade of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, logging 1,000 yards in every season—a league record.
This past year, the 30-year-old hauled in 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and a league-leading 13 touchdowns en route to his fifth Pro Bowl appearance.
Evans’ best season came back in 2018, when he caught 86 passes for 1,524 yards and eight scores, but he puts up fantastic numbers every year.
The Vikings are slated to have close to $30 million in cap room this offseason (per Spotrac), so they should certainly have enough room to brin Evans aboard.
However, Minnesota also has Jefferson’s contract negotiations hanging over its head, so it may want to extend Jefferson first before it makes a serious play for Evans or any other big-name free agents.
The Vikings went 7-10 in 2023 thanks much in part to a rash of injuries that afflicted the roster.
What would be really intriguing to see is what Minnesota decides to do with Kirk Cousins if it does sign Evans. Landing Mike Evans might make it more likely for the Vikings to re-sign Cousins, but, again, financial constraints may make that difficult.
