NFL Insider Boldly States That Broncos Need To Cut Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos have a lot of problems right now, and the biggest one is the contract of quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Broncos initially acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022 and handed him a five-year, $245 million extension in the process. The deal will take Wilson through 2028, which Denver was perfectly fine with as it assumed that Wilson would transform the franchise.

Instead, disaster has ensued.

Since Wilson took the reins at quarterback last season, the Broncos have gone just 6-17, including getting off to a 1-5 start this year.

Wilson was dreadful in his debut campaign, posting the worst numbers of his NFL career. Now, to be fair to the 34-year-old, he has been much better in 2023, throwing for 1,305 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 65.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.

However, the veteran is coming off of a horrific outing in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in which he went just 13-for-22 with 95 yards, a touchdown and two picks.

Plus, Denver simply isn’t winning.

ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano has gone as far to say that the Broncos should actually cut Wilson before his 2025 salary becomes guaranteed in March.

Graziano thinks the Broncos should simply take the dead money hit rather than continuing to hope things turn around with an aging quarterback under center.

It’s a difficult proposition for sure, but you also have to think that Russell Wilson essentially has negative trade value at the moment due to his massive contract.

Graziano may be right: Denver may be left with no choice but to simply cut the nine-time Pro Bowler.
