The Dallas Cowboys look to be in great shape as the regular season nears. There are no glaring holes on the roster, as they filled their biggest needs earlier in the offseason by making a few trades.
With roster cutdowns on the horizon, could we see the Cowboys make a few more trades? Roster consolidation is certainly going to be considered as it could be argued that Dallas has too much serviceable depth at a few spots on their roster.
Cutting players with value certainly wouldn’t be ideal. If the Cowboys could extract some draft capital, even late Day 3 picks from a team, it is better than releasing a player for nothing. If they are going to make a deal, the defensive line and cornerback room could be where a player is shopped from.
“Veteran Jonathan Hankins has been a pleasant surprise next to Smith, too, which has given Dallas a really deep group up front. That sort of depth exists in the secondary, too, so it stands to reason that the Cowboys could use guys in those areas as trade chips at the end of the month.” (H/T Heavy.com)
Dorance Armstrong Jr. is a name that has been mentioned multiple times this offseason as a potential trade candidate from the defensive line. Neville Gallimore and Chauncey Golston have as well, especially with the presence of first-round pick Mazi Smith.
In the secondary, the Cowboys addressed their need by acquiring Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts. He and Trevon Diggs are locked in as the starters, making some players at cornerback expendable as well.
DaRon Bland will likely operate as the No. 3/slot cornerback behind Diggs and Gilmore. That makes players such as Jourdan Lewis and Kelvin Joseph two names to keep an eye on.
A future Day 3 pick would hold some value to a team such as the Cowboys. With in-season trades becoming more prevalent in the NFL, they could use all the assets they can get so that competitive trade packages can be put together to fill holes during the regular season.
