7. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles
Dak Prescott recently appeared at 46th on NFL Network’s Top 100 NFL Players of 2020. Wentz didn’t make the list. The shoe is on the other foot today because Wentz claims the final spot in this article, and Prescott has to settle for an honorable mention.
The only relevant quarterbacks in the NFC East this past season, Prescott and Wentz split their head-to-head matchups. However, Wentz ultimately led the Eagles to the division title and a spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Prescott’s high-powered offense floundered in a critical Week 16 grudge match against Philadelphia.
While Prescott threw for significantly more yards than Wentz, he also possessed an extremely talented offense. Wentz’s season was more impressive because he uplifted a beaten and battered Eagles offense that lacked a true top receiver.
Philadelphia’s two top tight ends (Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert) combined for 146 receptions, 1,523 yards, and 11 touchdowns last year. The team’s top four wide receivers combined for 120 receptions, 1,276 yards, and nine touchdowns. By the end of the year, Greg Ward, a college quarterback turned receiver, was one of Wentz’s best options.
Ertz and Goedert deserve honorable mentions as well for serving as Wentz’s most reliable options throughout the season.
In the final month of the 2019 NFL regular season, Wentz completed 66.21% of his pass attempts for 1,509 yards, ten touchdowns, and one interception. The Eagles went 4-1, outscoring opponents by 35 points.
