The Indianapolis Colts took quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick of the NFL Draft back in the spring because they saw massive potential in the youngster.
An NFL scout told the NFL Analysis Network that indeed sees a bright future for Richardson, but he envisions one potential problem: injuries.
“Everything we have seen so far on the field screams future superstar,” the scout said. “The kid can simply do it all. Injuries are going to be a big thing for him. He has to focus on taking care of himself first and let the rest come.”
Injuries have already reared their ugly head for Richardson during his rookie campaign, as he suffered a concussion during the Colts’ Week 2 win over the Houston Texans and was sidelined for their Week 3 overtime victory over the Baltimore Ravens as a result.
Richardson indeed has a very aggressive play style and loves to make plays with his legs, so you can understand why someone may view possible injuries as a concern. On the bright side, Richardson has a large frame at 6-foot-4 and 232 pounds, so he can take more of a pounding than other smaller quarterbacks in the NFL. However, he may need to rein it in just a bit in order to preserve himself.
In three starts thus far, Richardson has thrown for 479 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while completing 56.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 85.4. In addition, he has carried the ball 23 times for 131 yards and four scores.
Richardson’s potential was on full display during Indianapolis’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, as he led the Colts back from a 23-0 deficit to force overtime. The 21-year-old keyed the comeback by throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another in the second half.
We’ll get to see more of Anthony Richardson when Indianapolis hosts the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
