NFL Writer Predicts Commanders To Bring Back Star Defender

The Washington Commanders dealt edge rusher Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers at the trade deadline back in October, but there is a chance they could reunite with him this offseason.

Young is slated to hit free agency this spring, and ESPN’s Aaron Schatz sees the Commanders as a potential fit for the star defensive lineman.

Schatz cites that Washington will have the most cap space of any team in the NFL and notes that it will definitely be in need of pass rushers after trading away both Young and Montez Sweat this past season.

In 16 games between the Commanders and 49ers this year, Young posted 25 tackles and 7.5 sacks, so while he was productive, it’s not like he lit the world on fire.

Young will be one of the most high-risk, high-reward players on the open market.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by Washington with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, registering 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. However, nine games into his second season, Young tore his ACL, knocking him out for the rest of 2021 and most of 2022. Between those two seasons, Young amassed a grand total of 1.5 sacks in 12 games.

The Upper Marlboro, Md. native made his return to the field this year, and while he was solid, he still has not lived up to his initial expectations when he entered the league.

Due to the risks involved with Young, it seems plausible that a team (like the Commanders) may be able to secure him on a relatively affordable, short-term deal.

But, of course, this is NFL free agency, so anything can happen.

Washington went 4-13 this season.
