This year’s Super Bowl matchup pinned two great quarterbacks against each other with Patrick Mahomes leading the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts leading the Philadelphia Eagles. It was Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs who came out on top in that matchup, winning their second Super Bowl in four years.

However, this offseason, Hurts was able to surpass Patrick Mahomes in at least one regard. Earlier this week, he signed an extension with the Eagles. It was a five-year deal worth $255 million with $179.304 million guaranteed.

That was a record-setting deal between Hurts and the Eagles, the largest in NFL history. His AAV of $51 million is now the highest in the league as well and the guaranteed money is the second largest behind Deshaun Watson.

Patrick Mahomes had some choice words for Hurts after learning of the new contract. He was very complimentary of the Eagles signal caller, as shared by James Palmer of NFL Network on Twitter.

“Congrats to him. He deserves it. He’s someone that plays the position the right way. He goes about his business the right way. That’s why they were in the Super Bowl and he played a great game in the Super Bowl. He proved a lot of people wrong that were still doubting him.”

Hurts has defied the odds in the NFL with the Eagles. There were a lot of people that doubted he would turn into much at the next level. He has proven all of those doubters wrong, helping turn Philadelphia into a powerhouse in the NFC.

The contract that he agreed to is proof of that. The Eagles are now fully confident that Hurts is the guy to lead the team hopefully to another Super Bowl title. Patrick Mahomes and others will certainly have something to say about that, as he is the one Hurts and company is still chasing down as the reigning MVP and Super Bowl champion.

While Hurts has the record right now, it is a contract that will almost assuredly be passed in the coming years. Lamar Jackson is still waiting on a new deal this offseason and plenty more are on the way.

Patrick Mahomes could rework his contract again with another MVP and ring under his belt. Young guys Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa aren’t far from extensions and Trevor Lawrence is right behind them.
