REPORT: Kansas City Chiefs Tried To Sign Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins last week, but before he headed to South Beach, the Kansas City Chiefs apparently made a play for the veteran wide receiver.

During a recent appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said that the Chiefs attempted to sign Beckham, but Beckham felt more comfortable joining the Dolphins’ offensive scheme.

“There were some other teams in the mix. I was told Kansas City was appealing to Odell Beckham, Buffalo as well,” Fowler said (h/t Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells). “But in the end, he believes this offense can still help him prove something. This is a player who put up less than 600 yards last year in Baltimore; probably didn’t go the way he wanted. So, he’s going to go be the third option, of course, behind Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, but he feels like there’s enough footballs to go around.”

It seems like a rather strange move for Beckham given the circumstances.

As Fowler notes, Beckham will certainly be the No. 3 receiver in Miami. Hill and Waddle will undoubtedly receive the bulk of the targets, meaning that Beckham may not even get the chance to even be as productive as he was with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.

Kansas City, on the other hand, has some questions in its receiving corps.

The club added Marquise Brown in free agency and drafted Xavier Worthy, but Brown is coming off of a couple of subpar seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and Worth is obviously unproven.

Plus, Chiefs No. 1 receiver Rashee Rice is dealing with some serious legal issues and could end up facing a lengthy suspension from the NFL.

Taking all of those things into consideration, you would think Kansas City would have represented a better option for Beckham than the Dolphins. It also doesn’t hurt to have Patrick Mahomes throwing you the football.

But evidently, Beckham saw a better opportunity in Miami. The Dolphins did have the top passing offense in the league this past season, so perhaps Beckham things he will get more targets even as a third option in South Beach than he would with the Chiefs.

Regardless, Odell Beckham Jr. is now a member of the Dolphins.
