Bill Belichick
Let’s get the obvious reason for why Cam Newton will succeed in New England out of the way – he’s being coached by Bill Belichick. There isn’t a coach in the league who can squeeze more talent out of every single player on his roster than Belichick.
We actually have an extremely small and unreliable sample size as to how well Belichick-coached quarterbacks have played since Tom Brady has been the only one in the past two decades. That being said, there is a lot to be learned about Tom Brady’s time under Bill Belichick.
In the last couple of years that Brady was in New England, he was clearly not the quarterback that he used to be. He didn’t have the same zip on his throws that we once saw in the mid-to-late 2000s. His talent seemed to be disappearing quickly and yet, his numbers didn’t drop off very much at all. That’s just where Bill Belichick thrives. If you’re a player who is willing to be coached, New England is the perfect place for you.
Look through all of Tom Brady’s backups throughout the years. From Matt Cassell to Jacoby Brissett to Jimmy Garoppolo, each of the names behind Brady shared a unique patch of success when the Hall-of-Famer wasn’t able to play. This isn’t a coincidence, as Belichick is able to cater his offense to fit each and every Patriots quarterback that plays. Expect a new-look offense in New England and another great season from Newton.
