Newton Can Avoid Hero Ball
In the past, Cam Newton has often relied on hero ball, and taking over games with explosive running plays. When plays would break down, Newton would find himself running successfully for first downs. However, with a slew of injuries from this type of football, Newton needs to avoid getting into those types of situations.
In Week 1, Newton needs to stick to basic football, and that includes checking down the ball even when there may be an opportunity to run through an opposing linebacker. Something he wasn’t able to do and achieve success with the Carolina Panthers.
Newton must allow his teammates to make plays for him as well, and checking down the ball to one of his talented running backs, can often afford them the opportunity to make a move and run for a first down. Additionally, it will help him produce in the box score, too.
Remaining inside the pocket for as long as possible to produce first downs with his arm rather than his legs would be a sound strategy for Newton with the Patriots. This will lead to a successful win for New England and a successful game statistically for Newton.
