The Philadelphia Eagles are in dire need of assistance in their secondary, and Lou Scataglia of Predominantly Orange thinks they can find the help they desire in the form of Patrick Surtain II.
Scataglia suggests that the Eagles trade two 2024 second-round draft picks and a 2025 second-rounder to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Surtain, which would give Philadelphia one of the best cornerbacks in football while providing the Broncos with some nice draft capital.
Scataglia explains that, based on the point system of the 2024 NFL Trade Value Chart, the three second-round draft choices would be worth the value of the 13th overall pick in the draft. So, essentially, Denver would be trading Surtain for the value of a mid first-rounder.
But would the Broncos do that?
Surtain still has two years left on his deal, as Denver has made the unsurprising decision to exercise his fifth-year option. The Broncos don’t have to be in any rush to trade him.
At the same time, because Surtain still has two years of team control on his contract, his value will certainly be higher now than it will be next season, and a rebuilding squad like Denver may not want to pay top dollar to keep Surtain on its roster.
Still, even taking into consideration what the total value of three second-round picks may be, it seems hard to imagine the Broncos letting Surtain go without a first-rounder being involved in the trade.
Surtain is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played every game and registered 69 tackles, an interception and 12 passes defended en route to his second straight Pro Bowl appearance.
The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by Denver with the ninth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He also earned a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2022.
If the Eagles can find a way to land Patrick Surtain II, they should do whatever they can to make it happen.
