The Philadelphia Eagles racked up an NFL-best 70 sacks a year ago and haven’t had much of a problem getting to opposing quarterbacks this season, but it may become an issue for the Eagles in 2024.
Both Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett will be free agents at year’s end, and with Graham turning 36 in April and Barnett being unhappy with his role, it stands to reason that Philadelphia may not bring either player back next season.
For that reason, Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder feels that Philly should pursue Washington Commanders edge rusher Chase Young come springtime.
Young is playing out the final year of his deal after the Commanders declined to exercise his fifth-year option.
The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign, rattling off 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
However, since then, times have been rough for Young.
He tore his ACL midway through 2021 and was limited to just nine games that year as a result, and even when he was healthy, he wasn’t very productive, totaling 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Young missed most of 2022 as he recovered from the knee injury, and he then proceeded to miss Week 1 of 2023 due to a stinger he sustained in preseason.
Since his rookie year, Young has played in a grand total of 15 games and has only logged four sacks, with 2.5 of them coming over the first three contests of this season.
Still, there is no doubt that Young has potential, and given his age, he will likely be a hot commodity in free agency. The Eagles could certainly look to bring him aboard.
Philadelphia has gotten off to a 4-0 start this season.
