Eagles Urged To Target Star Pass Rusher In Free Agency

If we learned anything from watching the Philadelphia Eagles this past season, it’s that they need a whole lot of help defensively.

The Eagles ranked 26th in the NFL in yards allowed and 30th in scoring defense in 2023, which played a major role in their late-season slide that resulted in a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

One of Philadelphia’s biggest issues was how badly its defense was lit up by opposing quarterbacks, as Philly ranked second-to-last in pass defense. It also wasn’t particularly great at rushing the passer, amassing a rather pedestrian total of 43 sacks on the year.

That’s why Tim McManus of ESPN thinks the Eagles should target edge rusher Chase Young in free agency.

Young split the 2023 campaign between the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers, with the 49ers acquiring him from the Commanders in a deadline trade.

In 16 games between both clubs, Young totaled 25 tackles and 7.5 sacks, and while those aren’t fantastic numbers, he is a talented young pass rusher who could flourish under new Philadelphia defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Young, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was originally selected by Washington with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He got off to a great start, registering 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown during his rookie campaign, but in his sophomore year, Young tore his ACL nine games into the season.

That limited the 24-year-old to just 12 games between 2021 and 2022, and during that time, he amassed a grand total of just 1.5 sacks.

Young rebounded a bit this past year, but you get the feeling that he still has untapped potential.

Perhaps the Eagles can help squeeze that out of him.
