The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the hunt for competition for Kenny Pickett this offseason, eyeing Mason Rudolph as their primary choice. However, if they fail to retain the seasoned veteran in free agency, they are exploring other options, particularly those with connections to their new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.

Rudolph is reportedly seeking a fresh start outside of Pittsburgh, signaling that the odds of him returning to the Steelers are slim. Consequently, the team is scouting for alternatives to challenge Pickett.

Among the potential candidates, Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has emerged as a rumored target for Pittsburgh. Additionally, Desmond Ridder of the Atlanta Falcons is now in the conversation.

According to NFL Network analysts Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport, and Mike Garrafolo, Ridder could become available if the Falcons pursue a trade for a quarterback or sign one in free agency, with Justin Fields as their primary preference.

“Once they acquire a new QB, potentially trading Ridder would be an option, as well. It might be a situation where a fresh start works for all parties.”

Given Ridder’s potential availability, the Steelers are viewed as a sensible destination, especially given Smith’s previous coaching experience with him in Atlanta.

During his tenure with the Falcons, Ridder, a former third-round draft pick, started 17 games, achieving an 8-9 record. He showcased his versatility by throwing 14 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and rushing for five touchdowns in the most recent season.

The Steelers’ interest in Ridder dates back to the NFL Draft process, and they could consider him as a viable option alongside Pickett during training camp. If Smith sees promise in Ridder, Pittsburgh might pursue the move, which is expected to come at a reasonable cost. This speculation has been echoed by others within the NFL community.

Team President Art Rooney II has expressed openness to acquiring a quarterback via trade, provided the right conditions and potential are present. Ridder could certainly be on their radar if the circumstances align.
