Could the Pittsburgh Steelers enter the Baker Mayfield sweepstakes this coming offseason?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk recently discussed the impending free-agent status of Mayfield, who is currently playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a one-year deal.

Florio noted that while Mayfield wants to remain with the Buccaneers, there will be no shortage of potential suitors for the quarterback in the spring. He then goes on to mention the Steelers as a possible landing spot.

Right now, Pittsburgh is employing Kenny Pickett under center, but two years into his NFL career, Pickett has shown little indication that he is legitimately the Steelers’ quarterback of the future.

Obviously, it’s still early, and Pickett still has time to prove himself, but his lack of progression throughout his sophomore campaign has some wondering if Pittsburgh will look elsewhere for an answer at signal-caller after the season.

Mayfield is enjoying a resurgent year with the Buccaneers, having thrown for 3,598 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.2.

Last year, Mayfield’s professional career seemed to be on life support after splitting the 2022 campaign between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, totaling 10 touchdowns and eight picks.

But now, the 28-year-old is back and looks better than ever, and his revitalization could end up causing quite the stir on the free-agent market in March.

So, would the Steelers attempt to snare Mayfield in free agency?

Well, Pittsburgh is 8-7 this season, so clearly, it has enough talent to win now. It is just missing some pieces on offense, especially at quarterback. Mayfield could help solve that problem.

The Steelers certainly have some capable weapons, like receivers George Pickens and Diontae Johnson as well as running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Perhaps sliding Mayfield in for Pickens will remedy a lot of Pittsburgh’s offensive woes.

Of course, Tampa Bay would have to allow Mayfield to walk in order for any of this to come to fruition. Mayfield seems to love it in Tampa, and the Bucs clearly enjoy having him taking snaps. After all, the Buccaneers are 8-7 and are closing in on an unexpected NFC South division crown.

We’ll see what happens when Baker Mayfield finally hits the open market in the spring.
