There have been a lot of concerns about whether or not Jimmy Garoppolo would be able to start for the Las Vegas Raiders once Week 1 rolled around. The team signed him to a big free agent contract in free agency, but upon taking his physical, it was revealed that the foot injury he suffered did indeed need surgery.
Jimmy Garoppolo was unable to pass his physical at the time, but the team still went through with the deal. There was an out in the contract, however, that if he wasn’t able to pass a physical, his deal would be voided.
That made an already uneasy offseason for the Raiders that much more difficult to go through. However, all of their worries can now be pushed aside. That is because, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jimmy Garoppolo passed his training camp physical this past weekend.
“Garoppolo, a source told ESPN, will be worked into practice “at the right pace” to start camp and “wouldn’t call it slowly” after the quarterback did not participate in any on-field activities during the offseason workout program.”
Even if the pace is slower than the Raiders had anticipated, they have to be relieved about this recent update. There was a lot of risk involved for the team, as Jimmy Garoppolo underwent surgery after signing his deal with the team.
That left the team without many other options to find a starting quarterback. Chase Garbers is the only holdover from last season, but he has yet to play a regular season snap.
Veteran Brian Hoyer, who has a connection to Josh McDaniels from their time with the New England Patriots, was signed in free agency and handled many of the first-team reps. Whatever he didn’t take was handed to fourth-round rookie Aidan O’Connell.
Luckily, the Raiders won’t have to turn to one of them to run the offense as Jimmy Garoppolo is on track to be in the lineup. It is the first good news that the franchise has had in a while as things don’t look good with running back Josh Jacobs and first-round pick Tyree Wilson was placed on the non-football injury list.
