The Tennessee Titans have begun purging their roster to open up salary cap space to spend this offseason. More moves could be on the horizon but they have released numerous veterans already in wide receiver Robert Woods, linebacker Zach Cunningham, kicker Randy Bullock and offensive tackle Taylor Lewan.
Now sitting at $11.3 million under the cap, the Titans could clear even more space if they opt to move on from quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Depending on how the offseason shakes out, that is certainly a possibility for Tennessee. As for the players they have already released, interest is already picking up.
Left tackles of Taylor Lewan’s caliber very rarely hit the open market. He has been a lynchpin for the Titans as the anchor at left tackle since he was selected No. 11 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Michigan.
However, a big part of the reason that he was released has been his inability to stay on the field. Taylor Lewan played in only two games in 2022 after appearing in 13 in 2021. He has missed at least four games in every season starting in 2019, which is certainly a troubling trend.
While his health is certainly a risk, there are plenty of teams around the league that should be willing to take a chance on him. If he stays relatively healthy, as he was in 2022, he would be a nice upgrade on plenty of offensive lines.
The New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders are two teams to keep an eye on. Bill Belichick is always looking for a high-upside bargain in free agency, which Lewan could present depending on how robust his market is. Coming from New England himself, the Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels-led Raiders could have similar thinking.
With money almost not being an object for the Chicago Bears, they are another team to keep an eye on. While people have pointed to the skill positions needing improvement in Chicago, if they cannot block for Justin Fields it won’t matter who has to target in the passing game.
Taylor Lewan has played his entire career at left tackle, but he is skilled enough that he should be able to handle right tackle as well. Depending on the situation that he lands in, he should be open to making the flip if it guarantees him more money or a starting job.
