The Las Vegas Raiders were able to pick up a victory over the New England Patriots in Week 6, evening their record up at 3-3. But, the victory was overshadowed by the injury that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered.

Garoppolo was on the field for the Raiders’ final drive before halftime, helping the team get a 13-3 lead. He completed 14-of-22 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown and one interception. But, he could not return to the field for the second half because of what was originally deemed a back injury.

The injury was so bad that Garoppolo was reportedly taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. That is never a good sign, but according to Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, things went as good as they could have.

“The prognosis is a lot better than it might otherwise have been,” McDaniels said, adding he, “dodged a big bullet,” in terms of internal injuries that could have occurred. That is certainly an encouraging update from the head coach, as Garoppolo is continuing to undergo testing.

His status for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears remains up in the air, but the Raiders can rest a little easier knowing the injuries don’t seem to be severe enough to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season. If he cannot start against the Bears, veteran Brian Hoyer will likely take his place.

Hoyer stepped into the lineup in the second half against the Patriots, completing 6-of-10 passes for 102 yards. The last time Garoppolo missed time, in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, it was rookie Aidan O’Connell who was called upon to start.

Sunday’s matchup against the Bears could be a battle of the backups. Chicago’s starting quarterback Justin Fields also suffered an injury in Week 6, hurting his thumb. If he is unable to go, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagnet out of Division II Shepard University could get the nod as the starter against Hoyer.
