The San Francisco 49ers have done an excellent job of building arguably the strongest roster in the NFL. They are loaded with stars on both sides of the ball as they are heading toward the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

As one of the true contenders in the NFL, the 49ers are considered by many people to be the favorites to win the Super Bowl in February. Should that happen, could a major void have to be filled along their offensive line in the offseason?

According to 49ers’ writer Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated, who has covered the team for 12 going on 13 years, star left tackle Trent Williams could retire should the team take home the Lombardi Trophy. Williams contemplated retirement following the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in last season’s NFC Championship Game and a Super Bowl win this season could be enough for him to hang up his cleats.

“So if the 49ers win the Super Bowl, he might consider that the best time to hang it up. We’ve seen Hall of Fame players retire after winning a Championship before.

“Plus, Williams has earned nearly $250 million in his career. He’s not hurting for money,” Cohn wrote.

Williams, a first-round pick out of Oklahoma in the 2010 NFL Draft, will be 36 when the 2024 regular season rolls around. A 10x Pro Bowler with three All-Pro nominations, the only thing missing from his impressive resume is a Super Bowl ring.

Earning that ring certainly won’t be easy, as the Baltimore Ravens showed in Week 16 that the 49ers aren’t the only Super Bowl-caliber team in the NFL. A rematch in the Super Bowl is certainly possible as both teams clinched the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences in Week 17.

Losing Williams would be a massive loss for the 49ers should he opt to retire. He remains one of the best left tackles in the NFL and is a respected veteran within the locker room. Replacing a player like that is easier said than done, as the team learned the hard way as they went 0-2 in games he missed this season.
