Fred Warner and the San Francisco 49ers will take on Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game this weekend, and Warner thinks Goff deserves more credit for putting the Lions in this position.

Warner has been familiar with Goff for quite some time, as Goff had previously played in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams before being traded to Detroit in 2021.

But now, Warner thinks Goff is a different quarterback.

“Not to say he wasn’t good when we played him back when he was with the Rams, but I think he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now with the way he finished, top three in passing yards this season,” Warner said, via Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ official team website. “Just the delivery of the football, his decisiveness and obviously with the amount of playmakers he has on that side he’s the one that is leading that group and he’s the reason why they’re at where they’re at right now.”

Goff threw for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.9 during the regular season. He has also been brilliant in the playoffs, most recently going 30-for-43 with 287 yards and a couple of touchdowns during the Lions’ Divisional Round win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 29-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of California, was originally selected by the Rams with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

While he made a pair of Pro Bowls in Los Angeles and took the Rams to the Super Bowl during the 2018-19 campaign, Goff never quite got much respect during his time in LA.

However, people seem to be coming around on Goff, as he certainly looks like a better player now than he did several years ago.

We’ll see if Fred Warner and the 49ers’ defense can contain Jared Goff this Sunday with a spot in the Super Bowl on the line.
