San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is entering the final year of his deal, which has led some to believe that the 49ers may have to end up trading him.
San Francisco has some serious financial constraints, so it will have difficulty affording Aiyuk over the long haul.
However, Niners general manager John Lynch provided a rather encouraging update on that front Monday, saying that the team is engaging in active dialogue with Aiyuk.
“We’re actively talking with Brandon, trying to figure something out,” Lynch said, via David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. “[W]e have a good history of working with the guys we want to get done to get something done, and it takes two sides. So, can we do that? We’ll see.”
Aiyuk is coming off of a spectacular 2023 campaign in which he played 16 games and hauled in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.
There were recently rumors that the Pittsburgh Steelers were interested in trading for Aiyuk, but it appears that the 49ers are doing everything they can to hold on to him at the moment.
“There’s a number of different directions that it could go, but we appreciate the heck out of Brandon and who he is as a player,” Lynch said. “We want him to be a part of the Niners, so we’re going to work towards making that a reality.”
Aiyuk, who played his collegiate football at Arizona State, was selected by the 49ers with the 25th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
After a couple of solid seasons to begin his career, Aiyuk broke out in 2022, catching 78 passes for 1,015 yards and eight scores.
We’ll see if San Francisco is able to reach an agreement with Brandon Aiyuk this offseason.
