The San Francisco 49ers have one of the best rosters in the NFL. Heading into the 2023 NFL Draft, there are no glaring needs on the roster. Their goal will be to fill out the depth chart with quality players that can step into the lineup in a pinch.
One of the under-the-radar needs for San Francisco is wide receiver. At first glance of their depth chart, it doesn’t look like that is a need. They have Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk as their top two options with Jauan Jennings, Chris Conley and Ray-Ray McCloud as depth.
But, the position could quickly become one of need depending on how things shake out in the coming months. A decision has to be made on Aiyuk’s fifth-year option, which should be a no-brainer. That option should be exercised, but keeping him long-term could be challenging.
The 49ers already are paying top-of-the-market contracts to multiple players and may not be able to afford a second contract for Aiyuk. The 49ers need to be prepared for everything and could look for some affordable wide receiver depth in the draft.
One player to keep an eye on is Jayden Reed out of Michigan State. The 49ers recently hosted him on a pre-draft visit according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Reed is an intriguing prospect in this year’s draft class. He spent the last three seasons with the Spartans after beginning his collegiate career at Western Michigan. A ton of experience was gained during that time, as Reed played in 42 games. He finished his career with 203 catches for 2,866 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Versatility is the strongest part of his game. Reed has lined up all over the formation and has been used as a move player as well on jet sweeps and reverses. His lack of speed, as he is more quick than fast, will deter him at times, but the tools are there for him to find success.
Reed would be a worthwhile investment for the 49ers in the middle rounds. They wouldn’t need him to contribute right away and could help him develop and round out his game. At the very least, he can make an impact on special teams as he has extensive kick and punt return experience under his belt.
