Legendary NFL quarterback Kurt Warner has some very high expectations for LSU star Jayden Daniels heading into the draft next Thursday.
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, Warner raved about Daniels, saying that he believes the Washington Commanders have to take Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick.
Daniels is coming off of a fantastic 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 72.2 percent of his passes. He also racked up 1,134 yards and 10 scores on the ground, averaging a robust 8.4 yards per carry. He won the Heisman Trophy for his efforts.
The 23-year-old began his collegiate career at Arizona State and spent three years there before transferring to LSU in 2022. He totaled 2,913 yards, 17 touchdowns and five picks while completing 68.6 percent of his throws and rushing for 885 yards and 11 scores during his debut season with the Tigers.
Daniels is widely viewed as one of the top three quarterbacks in this year’s draft class along with USC’s Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
Williams will almost surely go No. 1 overall to the Chicago Bears, leaving the Commanders to decide between Daniels and Maye at No. 2.
Earlier in the offseason, Maye was viewed as the second-best quarterback, but Daniels has climbed the ladder recently and is now suddenly considered the favorite to be selected by Washington.
The Commanders are certainly in need of a signal-caller after trading Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks last month. They signed Marcus Mariota in free agency, but he is obviously nothing more than a backup or a bridge starter at this stage.
We’ll see if Washington pulls the trigger on Jayden Daniels next week.
