The Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Geno Smith to a three-year extension going into 2023, but Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports is not sure if Smith will be with the team in 2024.

In a piece where Benjamin breaks down the quarterback market this coming offseason, he speculates that the Seahawks could ultimately cut Smith in order to save in the neighborhood of $14 million. However, he qualifies the statement by saying that that would probably only happen if Seattle takes a signal-caller in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Seahawks awarded Smith with a new deal after he enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also led the league in completion percentage (69.8 percent) and posted a passer rating of 100.9, earning himself a trip to the Pro Bowl. On top of that, Smith even received some MVP consideration, finishing ninth in voting.

This year, however, Smith has not been quite as productive.

In 14 games this season, Smith has totaled 3,435 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine picks while completing 65.2 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 91.6. He also missed a couple of contests due to a groin injury.

Those aren’t bad numbers by any means, but they are certainly not on the same level as the stats Smith recorded a year ago. Plus, Smith is 33 years old, so it’s not like he has a ton of room to grow.

Smith spent the first four years of his career with the New York Jets and was a failed starter. He then linked up with the New York Giants for one season, where he served as Eli Manning’s backup. After spending one year with the Los Angeles Chargers, Smith made his way to Seattle in 2019.

The West Virginia University product was ultimately thrust into the starting role last year after the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson, and he shockingly thrived.

We’ll see just how committed Seattle is to Geno Smith once the offseason rolls around.
