Heading into the offseason, there was some chatter that the Seattle Seahawks could potentially release quarterback Geno Smith in order to save some money, but the team has opted to guarantee his salary for the 2024 campaign.
However, that does not necessarily mean they will be holding on to him.
According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seahawks view Smith’s contract as valuable and could end up trading him before March 18. Considering Smith’s deal looks appealing to Seattle, it may also be attractive to other quarterback-needy teams, so the Seahawks may be able to land a nice package for him.
Smith just signed a three-year, $75 million extension with Seattle last offseason after he enjoyed a breakout 2022 campaign in which he threw for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.8 percent of his passes (which was the best in the NFL) and posting a passer rating of 100.9 en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
The 33-year-old was not nearly as productive this past season, as he totaled 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine picks while completing 64.7 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 92.1.
Still, even though Smith was not as terrific as he was the year prior, he was still solid in 2023, and given the amount of money signal-callers are making in today’s league, he certainly could represent a valuable option to some other clubs.
The question is, what would the Seahawks do under center if they trade Smith?
Seattle could always try and swing a deal for someone like Justin Fields, or it could attempt to trade up in the NFL Draft this spring.
All of that being said, Geno Smith is almost surely the best option for Seattle at quarterback going into next season, so the Seahawks will most likely be keeping him.
