The Chicago Bears are having a very difficult time finding a taker for quarterback Justin Fields.
When the offseason began, many assumed that the Bears would be able to swing a trade for Fields fairly easily. Teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders all seemed like great potential landing spots, and Fields showed some promise in 2023.
However, all three of those ballclubs signed other quarterbacks, leaving Chicago out in the cold.
The Bears own the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft next month and are widely expected to select USC’s Caleb Williams, so they need to move on Fields, and quickly.
But with the market for Fields drying up, rehoming the signal-caller is becoming more and more of an arduous task.
Could a darkhorse team throw its hat into the ring for Fields?
Former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi has suggested that the Philadelphia Eagles should consider trading for Fields, and Patrick Finley of The Chicago Sun-Times agrees.
How does that make sense?
Well, at this point, Fields will probably have to settle for being a backup, and the Eagles could certainly use some insurance behind Jalen Hurts.
It’s probably still a long shot. Barring an injury to Hurts, Fields will almost certainly never get a chance to start in Philadelphia for the next several years.
At this point, though, the Bears have to review everything, and it may not hurt to place a call to Philly and see if the Birds may be interested.
Justin Fields is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he made 13 starts and threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while rushing for 657 yards and four scores. He missed four games due to a dislocated thumb.
