The Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ deal with wide receiver Mike Evans could mean that an agreement with quarterback Baker Mayfield is on the horizon.

The Buccaneers struck a two-year, $52 million pact ($35 million guaranteed) with Evans on Monday morning, preventing the superstar wide out from reaching free agency.

Will we be hearing similar news about Mayfield soon?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk seems to think so, stating that Evans probably would not have inked a new contract with Tampa Bay if he didn’t already know who his signal-caller would be in 2024.

And who would Evans prefer as his quarterback? Probably Mayfield.

Mayfield just enjoyed the best season of his career this past year, throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 94.6. He earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl as a result.

Meanwhile, Evans notched his fifth Pro Bowl selection after catching 79 passes for 1,255 yards and a league-leading 13 scores.

The connection between Mayfield and Evans was undeniable in 2023, so it only makes sense for the Bucs to try and run it back next season.

Florio notes that it may only be a matter of time before we hear a leak that Mayfield is re-signing with the Buccaneers and says that Tampa Bay could then apply a franchise tag to safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

The Bucs went 9-8 and won the NFC South division title this past year, representing one of the most pleasant surprises in the NFL. They then proceeded to rout the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round.

If Mike Evans is catching passes from Baker Mayfield again come September, the Buccaneers will stand a great chance of repeating as division champions.
