Legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady was discussing Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes on his podcast this week, and during the conversation, he had a slight criticism of Mahomes.

Mahomes took a big, unnecessary hit during the Chiefs’ loss to the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday, and Brady said that Mahomes needs to learn to avoid those types of situations.

“There was a hit on Patrick Mahomes last night where he was running out of bounds where he wasn’t even out of bounds,” Brady said. “Quarterbacks need to learn how to throw the ball away. They need to learn how to read defenses and get the ball out of their hands. I always felt that my best protection was getting rid of the ball.”

Brady did not want to discuss whether or not the hit should have been a penalty (it did result in an unnecessary roughness call). He was more expressing concern that Mahomes even took the hit to begin with.

If anyone knows how to handle opposing defenses, it’s Brady, who played 23 seasons in the NFL and won seven Super Bowl championships.

Of course, Brady took his fair share of hits throughout his professional tenure, but as his career progressed, he began to learn ways to limit the damage. Mahomes is in his eighth NFL season, so he will almost certainly develop ways of dealing with it as he goes along.

Mahomes struggled in the loss to the Packers, going 21-for-33 with 210 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

It hasn’t been a typical year for Patrick Mahomes as a whole. While he has still been good, he hasn’t exactly played up to his standards.

Through 12 games, the 28-year-old has thrown for 3,127 yards, 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 67.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 95.1.

The Chiefs are now 8-4 and have gone just 2-3 over their last five games. They will aim to get back on track when they take on the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
