Vikings Showing Interest In Intriguing Free Agent Cornerback

The Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback group underwent a bit of a facelift this offseason. Veterans Patrick Peterson and Chandon Sullivan both departed in free agency, signing deals with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Vikings are hopeful that 2022 second-round pick Andrew Booth Jr. can take that second-year jump and start to lead the defensive backfield. But, replacing the leadership and production that Peterson and Sullivan provided isn’t easy, so the team could dip back into the free agent market.

According to Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis-Star Tribune, via ProFootballTalk, the Vikings have brought in veteran cornerback Ronald Darby for a workout. Darby has been busy with visits, as he also spent some time with the Houston Texans last week before heading to Minnesota.

A second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida State, Darby had spent the last two seasons of his career with the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, his 2022 season was cut short after he tore his ACL in a Week 5 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

In those five games, Darby had 14 total tackles with three passes defended and one forced fumble. This isn’t the first time that Darby has dealt with injuries as he played in only 11 games in 2021 as well.

Should Darby land with the Vikings, they would be the fifth landing spot of his career. Prior to his stint with the Broncos, Darby spent time with the Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills. Working his way back from an ACL tear, he will have to prove to teams that he is not only healthy but capable of still helping a team with games.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt the Vikings to add another experienced cornerback to their roster. In addition to Booth, they have Byron Murphy, Akayleb Evans and Mekhi Blackmon atop their cornerback depth chart.
