The Washington Commanders are going to look vastly different in 2024 than they have in years past. With a new ownership group in place, the franchise has been overhauled from the top down this offseason.

A new front office led by general manager Adam Peters, and a coaching staff led by Dan Quinn have been put into place. With the management and leadership positions now filled, it is time for them to get to work on upgrading the roster.

The Commanders were one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2023, going 4-13 on the season. They ended the campaign losing eight straight games as the team showed very little life after getting out of the gates 2-0.

When a team performs as poorly as Washington did in 2023, it is fair to say there are a lot of holes on the roster that need to be filled. Some were self-inflicted, as the Commanders traded defensive ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat ahead of the deadline in October.

But, the biggest need for the team heading into the 2024 NFL offseason, according to PFF’s Mock Draft simulator, is quarterback. Luckily for the Commanders, one of the positives from a poor season is getting to select high up in the draft.

Washington owns the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, putting them in a prime position to snag one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class. If that is the route they take, the perfect prospect is Drake Maye out of North Carolina.

“Maye possesses ideal NFL arm talent. He can hit just about any throw asked of him at the pro level with velocity and ball placement. He still puts the ball in harm’s way with more turnovers than you’d like, but the magnitude of the good he can do as a passer far outweighs the bad,” as written on PFF’s Big Board Analysis.

An argument can be made to not give up on Sam Howell, who had some flashes during the 2023 season. But, when the opportunity presents itself to select a top quarterback prospect, it is hard for a team to turn that down, especially with a new regime in place.

Peters and Quinn likely want to get their guy to build the offense around, and in this case, that player is Maye. Coincidentally, he followed in Howell’s footsteps as the starter with the Tar Heels and would now be replacing him in the NFL with the Commanders.
