Commanders Given Great Chance For Reunion With Star QB

The Washington Commanders tried rolling with Sam Howell under center this season, and while Howell showed some flashes, the results were mostly subpar.

The Commanders own the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft this spring, and the general consensus is that they will end up taking North Carolina’s Drake Maye with the pick (assuming USC’s Caleb Williams goes to the Chicago Bears at No. 1).

But could Washington instead opt to explore the free-agent market to solve its problems at quarterback?

DraftKings has given the Commanders the third-best chance to land Kirk Cousins in free agency, putting their odds at +500. Only the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons are ahead of them (via Chase Howell of Action Network).

Of course, Cousins began his career in Washington back in 2012 after the Redskins took him in the fourth round of the draft that year.

He spent his first three seasons in the nation’s capital as Robert Griffin III’s backup, but in 2015, Cousins was named the full-time starter.

The 35-year-old ended up holding that position for the next three seasons, making the Pro Bowl in 2016 after throwing for 4,917 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Then, in March 2018, Cousins signed with the Vikings and has been taking snaps for them ever since.

However, Minnesota may choose to go in a different direction next month, which would leave the door open for a reunion between Cousins and the Commanders.

Cousins is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played eight games before tearing his Achilles. During his time on the field, he was brilliant, totaling 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five picks.

Washington should probably choose to go with youth, but bringing in Kirk Cousins would certainly make the team interesting heading into 2024.
