When Aidan O’Connell was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, it didn’t draw much attention. With established quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer brought in during the offseason, O’Connell was initially expected to serve as a backup and absorb knowledge in his rookie year.
However, circumstances quickly changed. O’Connell found himself thrust into action early in the season and impressed when Antonio Pierce took over as interim head coach, ultimately securing the starting role for the remainder of the season.
His performance down the stretch, including victories against all three AFC West rivals, kept the Raiders in playoff contention until the final week of the season.
Despite his unexpected success, many in Raider Nation doubted O’Connell’s ability to maintain his position as starting quarterback beyond his rookie year. With a strong pool of talent entering the league via the 2024 NFL Draft and seasoned veterans available in free agency, some speculated that O’Connell would return to a backup role in 2024.
However, O’Connell’s late-season performance solidified his claim to the starting role. His continued development warrants giving him every opportunity to lead the Las Vegas Raiders offense.
During the offseason, the Raiders bolstered their quarterback depth by signing Gardner Minshew in free agency. Minshew, coming off a Pro Bowl campaign with the Indianapolis Colts, brings a confident and charismatic style of play that should endear him to fans in Las Vegas.
Barring any unexpected moves, such as a trade to acquire one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 draft class, the Raiders are likely to target a second-tier quarterback in the draft. This sets the stage for a competition between Minshew and O’Connell for the starting role heading into training camp.
Given Aidan O’Connell’s promising performance last season, he should enter camp as the frontrunner for the QB1 position.
