Black Monday in the NFL has been a busy day for the New York Giants. While head coach Brain Daboll isn’t going anywhere, the staff under him is going to have more than a few new faces for the 2024 season.

The first changes announced weren’t too surprising. The Giants fired offensive line coach Bobby Johnson and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey. Johnson oversaw one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history as New York surrendered the second most sacks ever in a season.

There were a lot of strikes against Johnson, but the most egregious was the inability to develop young talent and poor lineup construction. For McGaughey, the Giants’ special teams were decent enough in his first four years on the job, but things really fell off the last two. After lasting through three different regime changes, his time with the organization has come to an end.

While announcing those changes, Daboll also said that no other changes were expected, as offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale were both supposed to be back. That ended up not being the case, as Martindale has opted to step away from his position with the team.

In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Ian Rapoport mentions Drew and Kevin Wilkins. Both were on staff with Martindale as outside linebacker coach and a defensive assistant, coming over from the Baltimore Ravens with him. But, it was announced earlier in the afternoon that the Giants were firing both of them.

The writing was then on the wall of an impending divorce. That likely changed Martindale’s position on remaining with the team. Drew is considered Martindale’s right-hand man and if he had landed any head coaching jobs when he interviewed last season, was expected to take over as defensive coordinator.

In what has been a bizarre chain of events, Martindale is officially out as the Giants’ defensive coordinator on his own accord. It had been reported for weeks that there was some clashing between Daboll and Martindale, but the team’s production on the field did not slip despite any disagreements being had.

With Martindale out, the Giants are now in need of a new defensive coordinator. Leslie Frazier has been mentioned as a potential candidate. Another name to keep an eye on is Antonio Pierce. Should the Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach not get the full-time job, the Giants should bring him home as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
