The New England Patriots didn’t make too many major moves to the roster this offseason. The biggest addition they made was signing wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster away from the Kansas City Chiefs to bolster the skill position around quarterback Mac Jones.
Jones is on shaky ground heading into Year 3 of his career. He reportedly drew the ire of head coach and general manager Bill Belichick, which led to Jones landing on the trade block this offseason. While no move was made, he has to show some improvements this season or New England could be in the market for a new signal caller next offseason.
Part of the reason that Jones struggled last season was certainly self-inflicted. He was turning the ball over more than when he was a rookie, but some of the things impacting him were outside of his control. It isn’t his fault the Patriots’ offensive coaches last season were Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, who have defensive and special team backgrounds.
This year, he will be working under Bill O’Brien, who should be a major help in getting the offense back on track. The weapons around him should be improved as well with Smith-Schuster and tight end Mike Gesicki joining the lineup.
But, if the Patriots want Jones to truly flourish, they have to find success in the trenches. Winning the battle at the line of scrimmage is key to an offense producing. That is why finding some experienced offensive lineman is the one move New England still needs to make this offseason according to David Kenyon of Bleacher Report.
The Patriots signed Riley Reiff and Calvin Anderson in free agency, who will be replacing Isiaha Wynn and Yodny Cajuste. But overall, this is a young unit. It is a risk relying on so many young, inexperienced players not only in the starting lineup but as backups as well.
Having a veteran swing tackle is important and the Patriots don’t currently have that. Someone that can step into the lineup at a moment’s notice that has experience getting the job done is lacking from this depth chart.
There are a few versatile veterans that remain available in free agency right now. More are likely to hit the market once teams around the league start paring down their rosters and making cuts. It would be a major surprise if the Patriots didn’t look to add at least one, if not two, experienced backups before it is too late.
