In the last few years, we have seen a changing of the guard at the quarterback position in the NFL. Tom Brady’s retirement this offseason was another sign of that, as there is a new era of quarterbacks ready to become the face of the league.

Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is leading that charge. He has already accomplished things in his first five seasons as a starter that people can only dream of achieving or do in a video game.

Mahomes has won two Super Bowl rings, winning the MVP both times, to go along with two regular season MVP awards. While he has found the most success in the early going of his career, there are plenty of other young quarterbacks who he has had to take down along the way.

In his division, Justin Herbert is leading the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes’ biggest rival in the NFL right now is probably Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow and the Bengals defeated Mahomes and the Chiefs to advance to the Super Bowl at the end of the 2021 season, facing off against the Los Angeles Rams.

This year, Mahomes took down another up-and-coming young quarterback. In Super Bowl 57, the Chiefs defeated Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles for their second title in four seasons.

Fans of the Bengals and Eagles are hoping that they will see their teams back in the Super Bowl soon, vying for a title. However, based on NFL history, their chances of making it back are very slim.

Quarterbacks losing their Super Bowl debut have quite an eye-opening streak going. The last 17 NFL quarterbacks who didn’t win their debut in the big game haven’t ever made it back to the biggest stage in football.

Burrow and Hurts are both hoping that they can end that streak as early as this season. The Bengals and Eagles are amongst the best teams in the NFL and certainly are viable contenders, but history is stacked against them to make a run in the near future.
