Derrick Henry’s Dominance in the Backfield
The player who truly sets the tone for the Tennessee Titans on offense is All-Pro running back Derrick Henry and he isn’t going anywhere. A particular setting Ryan Tannehill thrived in was play-action situations as a result.
Last season, Tannehill used a play fake 26.6% of the time and that ranked ninth among all qualified quarterbacks. He completed 75.6% of his passes in these situations while ranking first in passer rating (143.6) and in adjusted yards per attempt (14.1).
The benefit of Henry’s presence in the backfield enabled A.J. Brown to benefit greatly in play-action situations. He was the league’s most productive rookie wide receiver in a variety of key categories and big plays from play-action were an important factor.
For as long as teams have to worry about stopping Henry, the job of whoever is at quarterback alongside him will be made much easier. That will continue to help Tannehill to produce with great efficiency.
