D’Andre Swift was widely thought to be the likely first running back taken in the 2020 NFL Draft. While he did not end up earning that title, he was the second back taken. The Detroit Lions decided to take him with the No. 35 overall pick in the draft after the Kansas City Chiefs took Clyde Edwards-Helaire at No. 32.
Even though he wasn’t the top running back drafted in his class, the Lions feel that they got a major steal with Swift in the second round.
Over the last couple of years, the Lions have liked what they have seen from Kerryon Johnson. Unfortunately, he has dealt with health issues in each of his first two years. Last season, Johnson was only able to play in eight games.
Swift, on the other hand, is coming off of a big season with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2019. He carried the football 196 times for 1,218 yards and seven touchdowns. Those numbers average out to a solid 6.2 yards per carry.
All of that being said, let’s take an early look at three ways Swift will impact the Lions and their offense in 2020 as a rookie.
