3. Can the defense cover a tight end?
The Saints’ defense was supposed to be improved this season and that has simply not been the case. The one aspect that sticks out is their inability to cover the tight end position.
Let’s look at their losses. In Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Saints allowed Darren Waller to catch 12 catches for 103 yards. That could be chalked up as credit to Waller, who is one of the top pass catching tight ends in football.
When you allow a Packers’ tight end group to succeed, it is time to panic. Mercedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger, and Robert Tonyan combined for nine catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
This is something that the Saints have to clean up. There needs to be an adjustment made so they can cover the tight end in an offense. Quarterbacks enjoy having their security blankets and that has turned into the tight end position for Saints’ opponents.
