3. Saints’ Role Players Stepped Up On Offense

Not having Michael Thomas creates a substantial void for the rest of the offense to fill. Alvin Kamara is able to step up in a major way to put up elite numbers. However, there is always a need for elevated output from others. In this game, Emmanuel Sanders and Tre’Quan Smith provided that.

Sanders got off to a very slow start to this season but produced what has been by far his best outing. Often exploiting the middle of the field against zone coverage, he finished with six catches for 93 yards.

Let’s not forget, Smith provided an important impact, too. He was targeted on just four pass attempts, but he hauled in all of them— finishing with 53 yards and two touchdowns.

Laatavius Murray was another talent that made vital contributions to this game. He received 14 carries and rushed for 64 yards and found the end-zone twice. He provided a needed balance in the backfield— not requiring the Saints to rely too much on Kamara.

It will be fascinating to see where this Saints offense will be at once Thomas makes his return to the lineup. The rest of the group appears to be establishing a rhythm together.
