Amidst Zach Wilson‘s availability this offseason, numerous teams have shown little interest in acquiring the former second overall pick from the New York Jets. Nonetheless, should the defending champions consider enlisting Wilson to serve as a backup to Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar Patrick Mahomes for the 2024 season?

Wilson’s performance over three seasons with the Jets has been underwhelming, and he was prepared to assume a backup role to Aaron Rodgers until Rodgers’ injury in Week 1. A change of scenery might be precisely what the 24-year-old quarterback needs to establish himself in the NFL.

In recent seasons, Kansas City has relied on Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert as backups to Mahomes. While both are dependable veterans, the offense experienced limitations with them at the helm.

Introducing a younger backup quarterback could inject a sense of vitality behind Mahomes, especially in case of his absence due to injury. Taking on a project like Wilson could mutually benefit both parties, potentially allowing the offense to operate with fewer restrictions under a youthful backup.

Wilson could prove his worth through this opportunity, potentially attracting interest from other teams after contributing to what could be the NFL’s first “three-peat.”

Mahomes has only missed two games in his NFL career due to injury, minimizing the need for a significant investment in a backup quarterback. However, history has shown that even the most exceptional quarterbacks can be sidelined, as seen with Tom Brady in 2008. Having a capable backup like Matt Cassel proved invaluable for the New England Patriots during Brady’s absence.

Quality backups have played crucial roles in supporting star quarterbacks and maintaining offensive momentum. While Henne and Gabbert have been reliable backups for Kansas City, there’s a case for exploring younger talent to offer both competition and depth behind Mahomes.

The financial aspect also warrants consideration, as Wilson carries a substantial cap hit into the 2024 season. Unless the Jets are willing to offset some of his contract or release him, the likelihood of Wilson joining Kansas City remains slim.

Ultimately, whether it’s Zach Wilson or another young quarterback, investing in depth behind Mahomes could be a prudent move for the Chiefs, given Mahomes’ status as the NFL’s most valuable player and a pivotal figure in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.
