Andy Reid Doesn’t Hold Back On Chiefs’ Offensive Struggles

The Kansas City Chiefs put forth yet another head-scratching offensive performance this past weekend, scoring just nine points in a 15-point loss to the Denver Broncos.

It was just the latest uncharacteristic scoring output for a Chiefs offense that had become accustomed to hammering opposing defenses since Patrick Mahomes took over as starting quarterback in 2018.

After leading the NFL in scoring last season, Kansas City ranks just 12th in that category in 2023, averaging just 23.4 points per game. That’s basically a touchdown lower than its 29.2 average from a year ago.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke about his club’s offensive struggles this week, saying that the issues go beyond the team’s rather thin receiving corps.

Kansas City’s receivers have been the subject of criticism this season, as it’s pretty clear that the Chiefs do not have top-tier talent at the position.

“Just keep getting better, all the way along, it’s not just a wide receiver thing, it’s all of us,” said Reid, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “A week ago, we were saying how good they did, just keep the consistency going on the offensive side is what we need to do — all the way around, not just the wide receivers.”

Andy Reid added that the team has to “work through it, that’s what we’re doing.”

Kansas City has only hit the 30-point mark twice through its first eight games, most recently doing so during a convincing 31-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7.

The Chiefs have been held to under 20 points three times this season, and part of that is due to their problems punching in touchdowns. The team ranks just 17th in the NFL in red zone efficiency this season. By contrast, Kansas City ranked No. 2 in that department in 2022.

The Chiefs will look to rebound from their tough Week 8 loss when they take on the Miami Dolphins in Germany this Sunday.
