The Chicago Bears have long been penned as being one of the NFL teams heading into the upcoming season facing a quarterback controversy. The incumbent starter, Mitchell Trubisky, will look to keep his starting job.
Many expect Trubisky to remain the Bears’ starting quarterback when Chicago takes the field for their Week 1 matchup. He will still have to earn that spot but his efforts seem to be going well so far.
When talking with reporters, Bears head coach Matt Nagy made it clear he likes where Trubisky is at mentally heading into the 2020 season.
“Whatever he’s doing, there’s just a great intention for him right now to play quarterback the best that he can and not worry about anything else,” Nagy said, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun Times. “Mitch right now is in a place mentally that I really just feel like is really good. I like where he’s at.”
The performance the Bears received from Trubisky in 2019 was disappointing compared to the impressive play he provided them during his sophomore campaign–earning a Pro Bowl nod.
Last season, Trubisky went 326-of-516 (63.2%) on his throws resulting in 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Bears finished with an 8-7 record during his 15 starts. Despite having one of the NFL’s top defenses, Chicago’s underwhelming offense was too much to overcome.
The Bears will need Trubisky to ramp up his play in the 2020 season to solidify himself as the team’s starter going forward. In order to do that, he must first out-compete Nick Foles in a position battle in training camp.
