Bears: What if Chicago had drafted Patrick Mahomes in 2017?

In 2017, the Chicago Bears stuck their neck out to draft a young quarterback out of North Carolina, a school generally known for its basketball prowess.. Despite backlash, Ryan Pace and the Chicago front office were content with their 2nd overall choice and believed that they had found their guy.

Fast forward three years, and that very same quarterback is in a battle with career backup, Nick Foles. Yes, Foles is a former Super Bowl MVP, but the 31 year old is most definitely not a top quarterback in the league. Trubisky, formerly a second overall pick, is now fighting for his career in the Windy City against this man.

Looking at the 25-year-old quarterback’s stats, you wouldn’t think he’d be in too much trouble. He has already made an appearance in the Pro Bowl and his numbers look promising. But take a closer look and you’ll see that he has been mightily inconsistent and struggled when his team has needed him the most.

That being said, he has been on par with Chicago Bears quarterbacks over the years. In fact, statistically he’s been better than anybody we’ve seen out of this city in a long time. So this begs the question: what if the Bears had drafted a different quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft?

The quarterbacks available after “Money Mitch” included Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Deshone Kizer, and Brad Kaaya, among others. Today, we’ll be focusing on what the world would look like today if Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears had chosen Patrick Mahomes instead of Mitchell Trubisky.
