The Sutton-Jeudy One-Two Punch
The Denver Broncos have what could potentially be the best combination of young talent at wide receiver. Courtland Sutton is coming off a 72 catch season with 1,112 yards and six touchdowns. He’s established himself as an up and coming star in the NFL, a big bodied receiver that Drew Lock can trust to win the 50/50 balls.
Jerry Jeudy is the Broncos’ first-round selection out of Alabama. Jeudy comes into the NFL with the great athleticism you expect in a first-round pick, but he’s also already an advanced route runner. You rarely see more NFL ready rookies and Jeudy should turn the lights on right away.
What is so good about this combination is that the two receivers get the job done in different ways. Sutton is a huge target, a back shoulder catch machine and a player that Lock can toss a jump ball. Juedy is a swift receiver, who wins because of athletic gifts and the fact that his fundamentals are above the level of a typical rookie. He had back to back seasons with double digit touchdowns and 1,000 yards receiving at Alabama.
Juedy is a go-to-guy because it’s almost impossible for him not to slip away from coverage. Sutton is a go-to weapon because he can make a tough catch even when he’s covered. Lock has two different receivers that should show mastery in two distinct styles. This is very much the best of both worlds at the quarterback’s disposal.
While John Elway took an uncomfortably long time finding his franchise quarterback, he wasted no time in finding a potentially elite pairing for that franchise quarterback. They say the running game is the best friend of a young quarterback, however two flashy receivers just getting started in the league may be an even closer friend for Lock. Speaking of the running game…
