It certainly wasn’t an easy game, but Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back to the .500 mark after picking up a win over the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football to close out Week 14. Things were hairy for a while there for the Buccaneers, who were unable to get anything going on offense for a majority of the game.
Tampa Bay scored a field goal on their first drive, gaining 72 yards. They would gain 143 yards on their next eight drives combined with five punts, two turnovers and one end of the half, scoring zero points.
During that stretch, the Saints were able to find some success against the Buccaneers’ defense. New Orleans was able to keep quarterback Andy Dalton relatively clean, giving up only two sacks and they didn’t turn the ball over once. However, they were unable to ever deliver that kill shot as New Orleans kicked three field goals.
Their decision to punt on 4th-and-1 from the Tampa Bay 44 with 5:31 remaining in the game was the turning point, as Tom Brady and the offense woke up after that. Brady led the team on a 91-yard touchdown drive in 2:21, providing plenty of time for another miraculous comeback.
New Orleans inexplicably threw the ball multiple times on their following drive, as Andy Dalton was sacked once and the second attempt on their down was incomplete. That forced New Orleans to punt the ball again, giving Brady 2:29 to get down the field for a game-winning touchdown.
To the surprise of no one, except maybe the people on the Saints’ sidelined, Brady did just that. Tampa Bay went 63 yards in 2:26, as the drive was capped off by Brady hitting rookie running back Rachaad White for a six-yard touchdown for a 17-16 victory.
That win was an important one for the Buccaneers, who now hold a 1.5-game lead in the NFC South over the 5-8 Atlanta Falcons. It was also a milestone victory for Brady, who won his 20th Monday Night Football game in his career, which ties him with Dan Marino for most of all time.
This one was certainly hard-earned, as the Buccaneers trailed by 13 in the fourth quarter after a listless performance for 2.5 quarters. This is the second time in his career that Brady overcame a 13+ point deficit in the fourth quarter, with the other being Super Bowl LI when he and the New England Patriots overcame a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in which they trailed 28-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
