Torrey Smith, Wide Receiver
Since coming to Carolina in an offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, Torrey Smith has largely been a non-factor in the passing game. In fact, the 29-year-old totaled just seven catches for 67 yards and a TD in the first four games.
But Smith caught all five passes thrown to him during Sunday’s contest, finishing with a season-high 43 yards and reaching the end zone for the second time this year. The veteran wide receiver was one of seven Panthers to catch a pass against Washington. Additionally, all five of his receptions came on the Panthers’ fourth-quarter scoring drive.
Here’s what Smith told The Charlotte Observer following Sunday’s contest:
“It just (means) mentally to stay ready. You always want to make the big play. I haven’t made the plays that I’m accustomed to making. … To see the team moving the ball, I’m always happy whether it’s me or not.
“You know, when you’re able to be involved, it helps to get over that bubble and break the ice. I knew to stay ready whether it was in the first quarter or the end of the game.
“And at the end of the game, I live for those moments, to have the opportunity to make the clutch plays for our team and to help our team win.”
That readiness coupled with Smith’s experience could play big dividends for the Panthers in the future.
