Panthers’ Backup Quarterback Competition is Alive and Well

For the first time since the Panthers selected Cam Newton with the first overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft, Derek Anderson will not serve as the team’s primary backup quarterback. That distinction is expected to go to either Garrett Gilbert or Taylor Heinicke, depending on which player performs better during the preseason.

Gilbert was the first quarterback off the bench in Thursday’s contest, completing 7 of 12 passes for 93 yards and a TD. Meanwhile, Heinicke completed 7 of 9 passes for 121 yards and a score after taking over in the fourth quarter.

In addition to his passing numbers, Heinicke also totaled 14 yards on two rushing attempts. So his ability to take off and run may ultimately be what puts him over the top.

It certainly won’t be because of his experience advantage, given that he has just one career NFL passing attempt compared to none for Gilbert. But he did previously play under Panthers offensive coordinator Norv Turner during his time with the Minnesota Vikings, which could work in his favor.

In any case, the competition is still wide open with three more weeks remaining in the preseason. Gilbert is in his second year with the Panthers, while Heinicke was claimed off waivers in April.

Both players will receive another opportunity to prove themselves when the Panthers host the Miami Dolphins on Friday, with a home game against the New England Patriots and a road contest at the Pittsburgh Steelers also remaining on the preseason slate.
