Most people probably feel that the Chicago Bears should part ways with head coach Matt Eberflus either in the middle of this season or after the year is over.
However, Bears general manager Ryan Poles doesn’t seem to share the same sentiments.
When asked about Eberflus’ job security this week, Poles actually gave his coach a vote of confidence, saying that Eberflus has cultivated a “stable” culture in Chicago.
“I know [to] the outside world, it doesn’t look like that. And I know it looks like we’re far away. But this dude comes in every day and just keeps chipping away,” Poles said of Eberflus during a press conference on Wednesday, via Max Dible of Heavy.com. “He has high integrity. The people that he brings in here — he’s done the work to make sure that they’re the people they’re supposed to be.”
That answer likely won’t sit well with the plethora of Bears fans who are beyond frustrated with the team’s 5-20 record since Eberflus took over as head coach last season.
But Poles is understanding of the situation that Matt Eberflus inherited.
“It’s been hard. It’s been really hard, especially from where we started last year, trying to build this and do it the right way,” he said. “What I see from him on a daily basis and how he gets this team ready on a weekly basis, to me, I see a grown man that has leadership skills to get this thing out of the hole and into where it needs to be.”
Chicago has made the playoffs just twice since 2011 and has not won a playoff game since the 2010-11 campaign when it went all the way to the NFC Championship Game, so the Bears’ fan base has grown reasonably impatient.
Chicago is just 2-6 thus far in 2023 and will take on the New Orleans Saints this Sunday.
